Sound moves matter the physics
Sound is vibration, and at the right frequency and strength it does real work. Doctors use focused sound waves to heat tissue, break up kidney stones and destroy tumors. Crowd-control "sound cannons" drive people back with sheer volume, and some studies link rumbles too deep to hear to feelings of unease. Different frequencies do different things.
Patterns in sand cymatics
Scatter sand on a metal plate and play a tone, and the sand gathers into a pattern. Change the pitch and the pattern changes with it. Ernst Chladni first showed these figures in 1787, and they are a big part of why many people believe every frequency has a character of its own.
Pitch used to wander the history
For centuries there was no standard. Baroque musicians often tuned A as low as 415 Hz, and through the 1800s pitch crept upward as players chased a brighter sound; Verdi was among the composers who pushed back. France fixed A at 435 Hz in 1859. In 1939 a conference in London settled on 440, and the world followed.
Why 432? the numbers
Fans of 432 point to where the number turns up: the 432,000-year age of Hindu cosmology, the 432,000 warriors of Norse myth, and "scientific pitch", which sets middle C at 256 Hz, a power of two, and puts A at about 430.5 Hz, a hair from 432. Some call it the tuning of nature; others, a beautiful coincidence.
What listeners say the body
Some people say music at 432 Hz feels warmer and calmer, and that it brings health benefits, from deeper sleep to less stress. The research is young: a small double-blind pilot study in 2019 found listeners' heart rates were slightly lower with 432 Hz music than with 440 Hz. That's what they say, not a claim we make.
Hear the gap your ears
